while going home . . .
had a look at the place Leo recommended for breakfast on 8333 Santa Monica Blvd
but it is a) too far a walk from here, b) not worth or not environmentally responsible to be getting in the car for c) I've been way too healthy as it is: since my fav supermarket is rebuilding for a year I'm confined to Trader Joe, which is a health place that even holds up its nose to selling diet coke, so my GOD, these Cali-queens do know how to overdo things!
Now my Hartevelt tax free jenever is empty, (quite popular at the pool nights here mixed with the 2 ltrs of diet coke from a 7-11), I'm confined to bad rosé they do sell at twice the EU price at Trader Joe (where they do have delicious salads!).
As flight read I did buy two titles at half price on the last day Different Light Bookstore was open: The tragedy of todays gays by Larry Kramer and Hitting Hard (on recession in the queer world) by Michelangelo Signorile
Refocussing on back home, I just read the Islamic citycouncil leader of Amsterdam West has dared our fanatic Christian minister of youth and family affairs to attend the opening of Amsterdam pride week, to give a positive impulse to Maroccan kids who in past years have done nothing but intimidate and molest homos. Let's see how he responds.

the fair, 2nd day
Hope I will not get caught up in the security curtain around Den Haag, in place for the Afghanistan conference, when I return. Just saw the security measures on the online NOS journaal. Pff; looks like LA! All day overHead choppers, and LAPD motorbike cops (HOT) stopping the slightest misdemeanour, with guns pulled. I was driving back to West Hollywood on fridaynight after the ToF reception and a warehouseparty (in skid row) dressed in chaps and yellow jockstrap. That would be perfectly OK back in NL, but I'm not too sure round here. When I lost my way returning and reversed illegally, because of a blocked street, I thought: 'I should not be doing this', but luckily, I got away with it . . .
This second day of the fair was even more amazing! Huge crowds proving that a recession cannot keep a cock from erecting . . . Nude models, gorgeous art, Durk at his finest. (although next time the could do with a good gay sound engeneer; that was BULLOCKS!)
Talked a lot with Roscoe. Love his work, and agreed to attend next time again! There is so much to be done: like Fucking the pope: the world should be pleased that us queers don't contribute to over populating the planet. At least we do not put any nerdy twinks on this world, I wish there was a way that all those nerds could really choose to be heterosexual. That would make our lives so much simpler . . the fair
Recession or not, the fair ended up with a record breaking number of exhibiting artists. Sex and art, like food prove to be a basic human necessities, that will continue, maybe even strenghten when times get rough and people have nothing better to do. Alhough some artist do have a hard time in making ends meet, now their regular high income (double standard) patrons signed off. Really enjoyed my fist face-to-face enounter with Roscoe. He has some gorgeous 4 meters high banners on his stand, that will be raffled at the end of the fair today, sunday. I'm game for all of them, even if I still have to figure out how to get them with me on the KLM flight. Further I bought one of the original pencil sketches that resulted in below work by Michael Kirwan:
The caution sign reminds me of the scene just next to my room here at the resort, where I've seen dozens of guys trip, because they have eyes for every manhole in sight, except the one in the floor. Still great to have a fuck at that steam room at 8 in the morning and jump in the pool afterwards. Is that my immense horniness, or not being adjusted to the 9 hours time gap? anyway,
breakfast is served now, so lets get some coffee and a bagel and then catch up on a few hours of sleep.
And if you did'nt have enough just yet, do spend some moments enjoying Michael's view on our purpose as faggots on this planet.comment?

the reception
It is amazing how a completely not governement funded org like the ToF foundation and it's army of volunteers manage to get their headquarters fransformed in a fully fledged museum. Just for the occasion of the artist reception, all volunteers stow away their normal grubby paperwork and open up the archives to present a completely different exhib each year. Only one or two works, too large to move, I remember from last time.
For the rest it's all new aquisitions or donated works. Further all kinds of memorabilia are pulled out and have us all looking around in amazement. Some younger guys did cause some irritation leafing through folders of very valuable and vulnerable old original artworks as if they were the latest 2Xist underwear collection, or the new AH bonus discounts.
For the rest not a bad word; apart from English I guess not Spanish but Dutch was the most spoken language this time, as a new volunteer called Bo studies the language and one of the 2 bargirls actually is from Den Haag. Further Spike ran a perfect show as the volunteers took on the new roll of security guards on each floor, since that proved necessary as just recently 8 original TOM drawings were stolen from a London exhibition. The thief has been apprehended, but the works are not (yet) retreived. A sad reminder of a similar occurance some 30 years earlier at Tom's 1st ever exhib in Hamburg. Apart from that, Michael Kirwan again ran a well disciplined show in the kitchen, producing the most delicious snacks with a team of even more mouthwatering young assistants. I sneekily offered one a place to stay for his trip to NL this summer (when Michael was looking the other way). He's a pretty strict kitchen chief, I must say, almost a camp version of Gordon Ramsey (ooops FOX again).
A reminder to myself (and to Spike): next time I will set up camp and equipment prior to this reception to record the visitors, with all their various fetish outfits, or lack thereof. They surely form an incredible exhibition in itself! Do stay tuned for vids and pix once they are edited back home!comment?

only getting more angry
flying down here, over nothing but blindening snow, until we got south of San Francisco, I wouldn't have thought I'd be swimming in an outside pool today, nevertheless, I's gorgeous here! After the Getty experience, and driving back the scenic Sunset blvd route I delved into the details of the Prayers for Bobby book again, between swims and tanning:
At this moment in time, it's not so much the parents or religion that do the damage, but the pathetic remains of what once was a vibrant community. Sure HIV took its toll and rendered us complacent and paralized for 2 decades, but somewhere that has got to STOP ! All of what our heroes, all dead and gone, but nevertheless the founders of what we have now, qua culture and economics, built up is going under. If our current community is again shoving every inch of our erections under the CDA PvdA CU and VVD carpet in a misguided view on multicultural tolerance and cheap infant market strategy, it has to end up deeply ashamed of itself.
I hope they don't come to regret their strategies, like Mary in this book, when an entire community commits suicide. In the seventies and eighties Reve and Kellendonk daringly searched for ways out of the religious mess. I'm afraid we will not find solutions with Balkenende, Rouvoet or DWH.comment?

maybe in Delft, but here it's still thursday the 26th
At least the Hartevelt Jenever tastes pretty good, and I need it to compensate for FOX news, MY GOD! that's awful! I'd better get myself cheered up around the corner on Sta Monica Blvd.
Sadness on Sta Monica as the depression rages on here. Different Light Bookstore is closing down. And my fav supermarket is closed for a year of rebuilding. No sign of depression a bit further on. At my destination for this morning. The Getty Center, looking awfully familiar for Den Haag residents, to their town hall. Also built by Richard Meyer.
Silly me has taken along a multitude of cables, but not the one to offload video and photo's into this pc. So you'll have to wait a few days for home-grown pix.

maybe I should go to Den Haag more often
I mean, after all, Pieter Claeys from lthr NL said in his lecture that a lot of nagging goes on in Amsterdam, and he does have a point. Den Haag, on the other hand, has only one leather bar, but . . . it's pretty good, like, they do have oil- and golden shower parties, bare-ass mondays and it is within healthy cycle range of my home, which certainly (over 60 km) cannot be said of A'dam!
Further Den Haag promises us 2 gay art exhibitions for the upcoming pride celebrations. I'm just a bit afraid that it may be another 'politically correct' affair, like the one we saw in Kunsthal Rotterdam see 21 and 23 nov 2007, geared towards showing we are "normal", instead of the one at Cobra Amsterdam see 17b-06-2008 geared towards our own communities, that showed we are "not so normal" and pretty deviant, but nevertheless a most dignified and valuable lot. Let's just
wait for details . . .comment?

maybe I should read a book
Whether by choice or not, the West finds itself in a low-grade yet bitter war with Islamic fanaticism. It is a war the West is singularly ill equipped to fight. The foe is resistant to any of the normal methods of conflict resolution such as negotiation, economic sanctions, or conventional armed confrontation. The Suicide of Reason shows how modern liberal societies, whose political theories are born of the Enlightenment, are unfamiliar with the nature of mass fanaticism. The West can only think of fanaticism as a social pathology, a failure to modernize, rather than as what it is:
a variety of social order that is not only fully viable in the modern world but also willing to use weapons to which the West is uniquely vulnerable. A governing philosophy based on reason, tolerance, and consensus cannot defend itself against a strategy of ruthless violence without being radically transformed-or destroyed. Original and thought-provoking. The Suicide of Reason explains the logic of fanatical movements from the Crusades through Nazism to radical Islam; describes how the Enlightenment overcame fanatical thinking in the West; shows why most Western attempts to address the problem are doomed to fail; and offers strategies by which liberal internationalism can defend itself without becoming a mirror of the tribal forces it is trying to defeat.

Celestial wisdom: Well, it’s official: condoms cause AIDS or at least they “increase the problem” - so says god’s infallible messenger on earth - his holiness, the Pope. This is consistent with prior church teachings such as the pronouncement in 2003 by Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo (who was then head of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family) that condoms are not effective in blocking transmission of HIV. Since the Pope is infallible, that settles it and you guys can go on with your barebacking and fuck raw - the way god intended. After all, if god had wanted us to use condoms to fuck, he would have created them, right? (txt quoted by rawtop)

more nostalgia and a deep respectful bow . . .
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV . . .
While on the subject of respect for the dead: handleiding nabestaanden = a manual for next of kin, which is a small leaflet all Dutch servicemen have to fill in before they are sent out to Uruzgan, Afghanistan. It gives them a chance to describe their last wishes
before it's too late. Of course anybody over 50 or in a risky profession or a motorbikerider or studying architecture in Delft, or people with terminal deseases should make similar provisions. Recently I've thought long and hard about reviewing my own wishes. My wishes for funeral music can be found in the right column here, but where does my financial heriatage, if I'll still have one, go in case of my demise. Sure it has to go to a homosexual cause, but the local org certaily is not one of the options anymore, as they proved to be most untrustworthy repectless nerds, with no clue on cultural heritage, nor their own lifecycle. Vagevuur would have been an option, but they too proved to be a buch of cowards. Then there are the Aids charities: they need some close scrutiny; Dutch HIV vereniging has made some awful choices recently and Schorer also steers on safe, rather then support the daring pioneers, like in the days of Act Up, when death was a certainty ,
true revolutionary strategies were not avoided.
So, for the moment, the only cause I can support would be GALA. There is no org exept the one we set up, that is dedicated to radical homo erotic art. Somehow foremost on my mind is securing that work will be continued. I am still going to have talks with IHLIA (former Homodok) about art and archives. What will happen with my art collection? Surely my family will not have a clue about its value, nor what to do with it. If IHLIA would put some more effort in preserving, supporting and protecting our cultural heritage, further then books and magazines, then they could move up in the list. I'm still looking for a true progressive org when it comes to politics.
I'm not sure if we have one, other then D'66 comment?

Stands for the street raised dopy prostitution kids of LA and other major US cities portrayed by Gus van Sandt in a.o. Private Idaho, Bruce LaBruces Hustler White and that other cult photo/filmmaker I forgot the name of, eh, just saw it on another BBC program on photography: Larry Clark, but they also mentioned Nan Golding, of . . . COURSE!
but it also stands for that legendary record lable/shop/production company, that thrived during the Thatcher years in the UK, but went broke under Blair, coz they were too socialist to make binding contracts with artists, so they all ran for the dosh once they hit the big time. (Does that again sound like short sighted DWH nerds?)
Saw an amazing 4 hour night special about them yesterday on BBC4 which reminded me they were at the start of Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Specials, Smith, Pulp, Anthony and the Johnsons, Depeche, Yazoo, Joy Division/New Order, Suede, and Robert Wyatt, whose shipbuilding we played at Pieters funeral.
It shows there's always hope and light at the end of each tunnel, since they had a big fat UK nr.1 hit and all possibe recognition awards again this year with Duffy.comment?

Pieter Claeys: Going Dutch The (hi)story of Leather Amsterdam
Multimedia "storytelling presentation" about the Amsterdam gay men's leather tribe. From the opening of the Argos pension in 1956 to the present day battle to keep the city's leather spirit alive. Special attention will be paid to inspirational leather icons Rob Meijer and leather poet Jim Holmes, the impact of HIV and the changing character of the leather community throughout the years. With this presentation he wants to 1) inform the audience on the history of Leather Amsterdam 2) inspire the audience by focusing on the life and groundbreaking work of Rob Meijer and Jim Holmes and 3) give the audience tips on how to use internet media, open source software and creative commons concepts in order to record or create something about their own community's history without having to spend too much money on it.
Pieter is a 27yo leatherman from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 2006 and 2007 he had a popular leather videolog on YouTube and he is involved in the organisation of Amsterdam's XXXLeather parties through Gents Foundation. In 2008 he started a non-profit multimedia research project about Amsterdam's leather community.
But hey, about not spending too much money: While most fags don't think twice about paying € 45,- to get into a rapido or XXX party, where's the commitment then? It didn't come easy 1st time around, the leathers then were bought at Waterlooplein, they served a purpose too, as protection for us bikers. Do we now have to carry buckets of dough to Mr B and Rob? Just to look good at the parties, where the eroticism is covered up with èver more expensive fabrics and nudity discouraged èver further? It will not work for some time, at least as long as the recession rages on. I also wonder why all leather these days look like brandnew and never worn. Although I do polish and take care of my gear, sometimes rivets pop out of the chest harness in a wild session, and my chaps do show I've been on my knees in the Argos cellar once or twice. Now please don't come around accusing me of being an old grumpy nag; I mean well and will be present as one of the few remaining relics of those days. As one who got his first piercing by Rob.
As a friend of Willem Kok / Dorus, who made posters for many legendary leather events. Wheather permitting, (it's a 60 km motorbike ride for me) I will wear some of my old leathers, if they could talk . . . .
while I'm at it, here's a sound sample, a cruising scene from a 30 year old softies show called "weteringcircuit"
and while I'm at it . . . sure, not everybody went to Paradiso yesterday: it was packed at Cuckoos Nest too; I could not even get my coat checked in, so I had to resort to the Web. It may be risky there on nights like this: you may get robbed, but at Paradiso you were sure of that in advance: crisis ? what crisis ?
and while I'm still at it . . . copyright issues: I've been treading this slippery path ever since internet started and most everything that had been set up until then was thrown in the air (in despair, by some). I've always seen it as a one time opportunity window, like the one in the SF series stargate, but accessing areas "where no man has gone before" does require a careful step.
I've always taken as guidelines, respect, admiration and a sense for historic perspective and value. The law sides with the people that use copyright not to support artists, but to make money and steer creative people away from anything they see as obstructing that goal. They are not based on deepening insight in human opportunities or shortfalls, and with christian authorities shortsightedly inspired to destroying our world by sticking to unlimited mindless procreation while it obviously steers us straight to armageddon through flooding and hellish temperatures. Why don't they see that salvation comes from us queers, only fucking for pleasure.
It's sad that record and movie companies, some book publishers, most art dealers (the wrong type of gay) and the churches, and the banks, HIV fund lurkers included, have always sided with maintaining a status quo, based on holding on to whealth and power, opportunistically siding with or just as easlily mis-guiding the un-educated masses, opposing overwhelming scientific evidence, and true moral values, until it's (almost) too late.

Does any of you guys remember 'stereo maar ook mono afspeelbaar', or the notice "stereo also playable in mono", that appeared on LP records around the mid sixties? Although we all knew the purpose of having 2 ears in real life, the music industry did not agree on how to deliver different channels to each of them. In the early songs, like this one, every instrument was shoved either to the left or to the right channel. I kind of miss that nowadays: all we hear, or think, has to come from the middle again.

T dance next week . . .
Now on with the other issue I brought up in the two Frans Kellendonk entries of 26-02 and 04-03, about me being a reactionary missionary, of sorts, for the good-old sexual liberation:
These huge babyboom classes of my youth, have tought me a deep distrust for the power and opinions of the masses, and even more of the loudmouths that think they can play these sentiments, the school-bullies. That's where the fundamental difference lies between Kellendonk and Wilders. The first posed his thoughts for himself and to seach his soul for truths and meaning, very reluctant to voice them and distrusting his primairy gut feelings, while Wilders thinks he can upgrade his stature by degrading others' and seems to only voice opinions to find support and power with the masses, not shying away from the cheaper sentiments. Feeding on the 'social' argument that says "are the masses not entitled to their opinions?"
I'm only just learning to voice my own thoughts on stuff like this, and leaving it so late does not make it easier. I've often kept quiet about my allergy to 'popular opinion', afraid of becoming 'unpopular' myself. Now I seem to have passed a point where it's 'like it or leave it'. I can't force myself away from my convictions any further. I find new respect for a cartoonist like Nekschot and a homo erotic artist Bernard, searching for the moment where (homo)sexuality awakens: guys who were just bound to clash with current 'CDA justice', while I harbour èver more suspicion and rejection towards strategists and the opinions of 'mannetjesmakers', Dutch for 'spin doctors'.
Sometimes I feel my own thoughts voice opinions of the masses better than the 'professionals' in charge of the public debate within the orgs I try to work with. Why is poz and proud called so if there is an embargo on talking, writing about, depicting or ridiculing what got these guys their serostatus? Is this not a homosexual group? If they can't be out and proud, then the name Poz and Proud is a grave mistake and should read 'poz and scared shitless'!
Must I really avoid all references to sexuality if I make a video? I'm sorry, I can't cope with sex panic hysteria and won't. Besides, I'm allergic to self supression/self sensorship
It's not that I've tried to stuff all that I'm saying, or think out loud, here into this video; it already was a very prudent, modest, strategic thing, in my view. Denying any further what it is about by striking the last reference to male to male sexuality would mean it's no longer me.
If I must be getting my inspiration for an event for homo men from 'the gay krant', (which I despise) rather then from BUTT magazine (which I quite enjoy) then I'm in the wrong place and I doubt being involved (as contributor) can be 'constructive'. Some may think I'm blowing this issue out of proportion, and I hope I am: This should not be an issue. All the kids with cash, who just want to dance, will be at another party. I just feel we should not be too afraid of what people think of this org. They will think it anyway, even if we chose another venue or name. If they come along to this €5,- event they'll see +&Pr is on a well planned and responsible course, but could do with more self confidence, a and some sex now and then.
cheers to the days that queer ment revolutionary, and people were not so greedily braindead, as to even be pesuaded to stand in line for a full day, just to see an € 80 milion diamond skull.

more Franzl,
Just watched the VPRO documentary (see entry of 26-2) again,
as a)I wanted to capture some footage of Frans talking for this log,
and b)there was way too much that had to sink in, and now I'm even more impressed and humbled:
I find it miraculous how he wrote down stuff about 20 years before it got to be somewhat accepted, or at least broadly discussed, like right now: his position on religion, loss of morality, was it reactionary? At least he never held back and wrote what he thought. Did he, like Pim and Rita, "write what he thought and do as he said"? I'm not too sure if the comparison can be taken anywhere there. I have always been reluctant in expressing my deepest thoughts. A Roman Catholic upbringing in huge classes (over 50 kids was the norm then: babyboom) followed by a technical study did not help either and hardly gave me a chance to think these things through. With me it was simple: if the church rejected me, then, too bad . . . I left it behind.
Frans was very reluctant to come to such a conclusion: " It's your horniness, even though you're bleeding, right under the skin. And then, all of a sudden, you find you're rotting down there; dead inside. Sex without procreation, maybe even the fear of it, becomes an obsession.
Men and women have this bond with god, of which I cannot be a part. I felt dying was for women. I had nothing to with them anyway.
We much rather play the theater of life-fulfilling erotica, and heteros believe us, they are even jealous of our sex addiction. They too would like to be perverts. Just when you start to doubt the purpose of your sexual inclinations, you find they've become a broadly accepted ideal: everyone wants sex without history, sexe pour sexe, that shirks marriage; backs out of heaven and hell. That perfect-love never had a future: nothing could come from it. It was inevitably turned into itself. Only in an environment of elated madness they could keep it up. That is why it had to become an obsession.
In bed, or the darkroom, we're best able to exorcise our lack of prospect. Don't think of anything; undergo the intoxication of man meat, adaptable, both soft and hard. If he pressed a boybody against himself, smelled his hair, skin rubbing skin, softly, friendly, sweaty, then the world of time and decay, of the female, was only make belief.
Fear for the emptiness, eventually falsifies the only authenticity and sincerity in the queens, their love . . .
Nowhere you'll meet more Don Juans and nymphomanic hotemetoten as in their midst; courting, marriages, complete with 'till death do us part', jealousy, slapstick, mayhem. All forms and conventions that have resulted from the responsibility of raising offspring, are copied without any necessity, and therefore ridiculous. Homosexuality that has no role in history, and no forms of its own, is doomed to imitate and exaggerate. . .
What happens in the hetero world as a tragede, repeats itself in the homo world as a farce."
Art as en escape and as a substitute for purpose in life also proved to be a misconception in Frans' last writing, as he by then realised his life was coming to its conclusion.
This surely is not where I am: Art has been my life, my accomplishment sofar, and hopefully will remain if health and the economy will let me. Just as sex still is, with all its pitfalls, the ecstacy and agony. As long as I'm able to maintain a 'healthy' diet of it, even if atripla is part of that.
If Frans was reactionary in his time, so it appears I must be in this century, not to defend the value of religion, but as advocate of the purpose and accomplishments of good-old sexual liberation:

Balkenende and his christen-democratische accomplices are the greatest danger for our constitutional liberties. the Netherlands, through ages of in-breeding of its perverted and kept-ignorant agricultural inhabitants that blindly, persistantly voted CDA time after time, have feasted holland for over a century to a menu of lick-up-kick-down collaborateurs, we've gotten so used to that we accept it as the norm, but it will lead us eventually and inevitably to final doom and damnation, in the afterlife, for those who believe it exists, that much is true.
Once you trade freedom for peace, you're doomed. (Gregorius Nekschot, Copenhagen 2009)

and speak each other in passing; Only a signal shown;
a distant voice in the darkness
So on the ocean of life we pass
Only a look and a voice;
a touch extacy
then darkness again and a silence.
